Companhia dos Caminhos de Ferro de Beira Alta

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 230-2059 (Locobase 3355)

Data from [], the web site of the Spanish National Railway. See also the Madrid Railroad Museum's (Museo de Ferrocarril de Madrid) website at [], last accessed 9 April 2015. Three (works numbers 17647-17649) arrived in 1907, three more in 1909.

Combining a high-pitched boiler with Belpaire firebox and outside valve gear, this were a sextet of low-drivered freighters built originally for this Portuguese railway. According to the MdFdM website, their design harked back to a set of older Ten-wheelers of Scotland's Highland Railway known as the Castles (Locobase 3021).

All versions of the RENFE diagram give tube counts, diameters, and lengths that together with the firebox heating surface don't come close to presenting the evaporative heating surface area shown in the diagrams.

Locobase calculations suggest an exact fit with the reported EHS is close to that of the previously mentioned Castles. Changing tube count to 260 (from 126) and length to 14.75 ft lines up almost exactly with the EHS.

They were later sold to the Medina del Campo a Zamora, Orense y Vigo (M.Z.O.V) in Spain and taken into RENFE in 1941.
